My approach to piano teaching is a classical one
with necessary adaptations
to the motivational needs of students.
I believe that
the most basic and essential musical skill is listening.
Effective piano study both is dependent
upon and promotes
good listening skills.
To that end, I usually follow the Achievement in Music curriculum of
the Illinois
State Music Teachers' Association, of which I am a member.
This is a good curriculum for
piano students of many abilities and goals,
and includes an optional annual testing process
that provides
accountability and second opinions for students and the teacher.
See the link "AIM" for more details about this.
Lessons are held at my Oak Park home studio
where I have a substantial music library
and two pianos.
Students must have daily access to
a piano -- acoustic or digital.
A keyboard is not sufficient beyond the first few weeks of
lessons.
Recitals (optional) are held once or twice
a year at a lovely landmark building
with an excellent piano and good acoustics.
